Google to lay off 12,000 employees, the latest tech giant to cut thousands of jobs

On Friday, Google reported that it intended to reduce about 12,000 jobs, thereby joining the list of other technology companies doing the same task of reducing personnel by thousands.

Sundar Pichai, Chief Executive Officer of Google and the parent firm Alphabet affirmed the layoffs through an email sent to the employees of Google. It was later issued in a blog post by Google.

The reduction of jobs would decrease the staff by about six percent.

“This will mean saying goodbye to some incredibly talented people we worked hard to hire and have loved working with. I’m deeply sorry for that,” as written by Pichai. “The fact that these changes will impact the lives of Googlers weighs heavily on me, and I take full responsibility for the decisions that led us here.”

“Over the past two years, we’ve seen periods of dramatic growth. To match and fuel that growth, we hired for a different economic reality than the one we face today.”

Pichai stated that the termination will reflect the outcomes of a “strict analysis” of the functioning of Google. The postings being terminated would be “cut across Alphabet, product areas, functions, levels, and regions,” as stated by him.

How many personnel is Google comprising?

Conforming to a regulatory filing in September 2022, Alphabet stated that it kept approximately 187,000 staff members when compared to about 150,000 staff by the end of 2021 and 119,000 in 2019.

The reduction of 12,000 posts which was declared on Friday showed more than six percent of the total personnel.

Were the staff members affected by Google’s termination issued a notification?

Conforming to the message given by Pichai, the staff members of the United States were already issued a notification. He declared that the procedure would take more time in other countries due to native regulations and practices.

In the United States, the terminated staff members will be given a payment for the notice period which is about sixty days, bonuses for 2022, and the leftover vacation time. Google would also provide a package of severance commencing at sixteen weeks along with two additional weeks for each year worked by the personnel at Google. Conforming to Friday’s message, it will as well provide six months of healthcare, immigration support, and services of job placement.
